You mean that your keeping him for a whole year?

Yep, sad to say....if he didn't have so many other good qualities, the one or two bad ones would certainly earn him a .22 gun funeral!

I can't help but admire him when he does things like this.....so sneaky and enterprising! I mean, the dog had to actually climb into a tree to get a few of those eggs! He has amazing survival instincts for which I admire him....not to mention he is a dog who rarely barks, kills moles and mice, coons, groundhogs and eats any and all types of garbage. And he's the friendliest, smartest, prettiest guy you'll ever find~and an excellent guard dog, to boot!

All those things add up on the "pro" side and the egg-sucking, tomato stealing, rhubarb and chives chewin' is just a few....well.....glitches in an otherwise perfect dog! Annoying? YES! Unforgivable? Nope.

Plus, he really reminds me of my youngest boy sometimes....except with four legs!

YES! Very pretty....like shiney chocolate! And he doesn't have that doggy smell like my GP. He smells good...well, except his chicken poop breath!

We had Sweet Lou for Easter dinner and he was very tastey! About the size of a small turkey, with very, very dark meat. Its so nice to taste chicken that really tastes like chicken!

One more vote for culling of excess, trouble or nonlaying birds.

My other two roos hardly ever crow compared to Sweet Lou...he crowed all the time!

My hen's feathers are growing back, as the other two roos aren't so big and destructive on the mating.

The other two roos don't fight each other or knock each other off of hens like SL did.

My CTV hours are much more peaceful and pleasant now!

Good meal, peaceful barnyard, beautiful, non-stressed hens.....yep, good decision!

Our grass is turning a verdant green now....and I'm seeing young sheep grazing on it in my mind! Soon, now......

I'm planning on letting them graze first in the enclosure that used to be my temp. chicken run. Then they will be released onto my deepest, richest grass at the front of the yard.

After they graze this paddock, I plan to treat half of it with liquid fertilizer in the form of diluted urine. I want to use that patch as my test site for this type of fertilizer to see if it makes any difference in the growth and thickness of the sward.

Hi Bee.... Glad you enjoyed that rooster. I was going to cull one myself but I found him dead in the pen 3 days before culling day. I am guessing my EE roo finally had enough of him. They never really fought but sure did bow up at each other on occasion.

So that was a wasted roo. Next time I won't wait so long to finally decided to do the deed.

I have 2 Silkie roos that need to go but just can not bring myself to make it happen. Lordy, thats what happens when you fall in love with your Silkies. LOL

I've heard of this Silky thingy on BYC.....must be contagious! I got to see some up close at the Penn. Farm Show but wasn't impressed as much as most folks. They looked kind of frivolous to me and I'm a practical,fat farm gal type.....must be why I gravitate towards the dual purpose breeds!

Silkies are considered to be a delicacy in the Orient. They are supposed to be especially delicious because of their black skins.

I would probably have trouble eating them too, however wonderful they are supposed to taste. They are just so small - they would probably only make a soup or a snack. I try to buy only chickens that I know I will be able to eat in the end. This has eliminated the Cochin bantam and the Modern Game bantam from my hen house. I tend to get mushy when faced with either of those breeds, since these are the ones I loved the most as a kid.

I have no trouble with any of my other chickens. And as practical as I can be in most other areas of my life those Silkies were mostly ordered as pets (I just intended to keep one or 2 as pets) with the thoughts of finding an Asian market for them to help pay their way. LOL Well, I fell in love with their gentle nature and sweetness and never looked for the market. Now I know I will never eat them myself and keep saying I need to get rid of a couple. They are such sweeties I just can't do it.

My DH laughs at his hard core, practical wife, who has no trouble killing, cleaning and eating, most chickens, rabbits, deer, squirrel or anything else. He says its funny to watch me baby those Silkie Chickens and cringe at the thought of having to kill one.

Oh well, give me a week or two and I will talk myself into it.
