Got a chance to snap a few pics today while cleaning out coops and such. It takes so dang long to upload with dial-up that I will post a few here and there along the way.
This is part of my flock in the orchard. They are very, very shy when I get out the camera, but any other time I practically have to kick them out of the way!

And this is red broody, Nancy, with her three 4 day old chicks. They, too, were not thrilled about someone looming over them with a camera!

I removed the eggs from under black broody, Bob, and replaced them tonight with other eggs. I found one broken under her yesterday that was not developing. As they are all Dom eggs and I'm not having too good a hatch rate with them, I decided to start all over with the other chicken's eggs. I candled and found the ones with the largest air cell and replaced her eggs. Seven eggs of the eight under her were not developing! I would have had one chick....maybe!
I wanted to order some Dom hens and a roo and just put them under her in the middle of the night, but no female Doms, Partridge Rocks, Brahmas, etc. could be found until way in the future.
So....try again with a different breed of eggs....and who in the world knows what I will get!
I just don't want to waste a good broody mood!

Several years ago I had a broody little Spangled Hamburg, since we have no rooster it was rather sad. So I gave her two of the slow grow Frankenbirds I had bought for the freezer.
One got out of the pen and was happily "retrieved" for me (now dead) by my big goofy dog. The other one was bigger than "mama" in no time. Funny to watch a giant bald Frankenbird trying to get under the wing of a little Hamburg.

Bee, I thought of you when I went to buy my new doeling yesterday. The guy had sheep, the kind you are getting I think, and he was milking one of them. You shoulda seen the udder on that ewe! Ginormous! He makes cheese and soap with it, and uses some for his bottle lamb (rejected by a new momma.)

2Dream, thank you very much! The orchard is blooming right now and, when it gets full bloom, I'll try to post a pic of it. You know, gals? I love this time of year so very much....its like eye-candy for the soul! 
FF, my grey chick is sort of like that right now...huge! Funny, though, as soon as I let mama rejoin the flock, she barely hangs with her chicks. They slept under her on the roost the first few nights but now they roost by themselves in with big gals. No signs of them getting picked on at all!
They try to forage along with their mom sometimes but mostly they are off among the flock doing the big bird thing! A month old and already integrated....don't even have all their real feathers yet. I'm liking this raising them all natural thingy....so much better than the brooder, lights, etc.
Free, that's why I really like those Khatadins! Big ol' udders hanging, like a milk goat. Even if one doesn't want to milk them, it means more milk for lambs and a bigger, healthier weanling. I watched them in this fella's barn and saw lambs switching off between mamas and asked him about it. He says these sheep will feed anybody's baby! He seemed annoyed about it, says he likes a crankier sheep who insures her babies get first choice. I kind of like that docility, as it may help me foster babies in the future. With me being at work all day, if I had a bottle lamb it would be impossible!
Got my first load of manure today and it is very composted!! No odor whatsoever, full of big ol' worms, dark and rich! My apple trees won't know what to think getting fed like this!
Let red broody and the tiny trio out on grass today...they are almost a week old and its time to see the world! Its about 85 degrees out today with a mild breeze, big, fluffy clouds and pure heavenly green grass. They ought to really love it!
More good news....Eli got past his physical for the Guards and has a ship date in July! Means he's definitely in and that I will have him around a little longer....he's my right hand man around here and one of my best friends, so this gives us a little more time before he is gone for a year!

Yep - having Geek son just living "down the way" is a tremendous help, so I know your meaning. It is sure nice to have that little extra help available when the going gets heavy.
I have had the same experience with my broody raised babies - NEVER any pecking order problems. They are just accepted into the flock with open arms. Sure makes things easier.

Journal entry for today:
Went to church.
Drove through one of the loveliest valleys on earth.
Stopped and got manure on my way home from church.
Went fishing with my boy.
Enjoyed a snooze in the orchard swing, surrounded by sweet-smelling blossoms, dogs and chickens all sunning and snoozing, purring and sighing, while bees buzzed contentedly overhead.
Enjoyed a simply glorious day in thankful prayer for my life here.
Prayed about a cow named Blossom!
Went to church.

Got a garden gate set up with my solar fence charger on a sturdy, well-set post. Also got the first of the stakes placed for the electric wire around the garden.
Son #2 got the first coat of paint on three sides of the cellar house and Son #3 got the rest of the doors painted on the outbuildings.
Will be contacting the owner of Blossom tonight and arranging a meeting time and place to see this cow. I hope this other lady doesn't want to buy her!
My grass is so thick, green and lush that I must really get some animals on it now or it will have to be mowed! So funny to see the large green clumps and mounds of grass where the dogs regularly pee! Man, that's good fertilizer!
Everything is slowly coming around and preparing for that first plant or seed in the garden! I have a very large pile of composted horse and sheep manure, I'm getting a fence around to keep out chickens and dogs, and my sprouts are getting larger by the day. The tomatoes have their third leaf and the flowers and herbs are slowly following suit.
The apple blossoms are almost at their peak, so tomorrow I will be taking some pics for you all of the orchard. The sweet smell is so intoxicating, even my boys were loving it!
