It will happen when it happens.

We had a mare once showing all the signs and definitely at term. (Registered mare and no stallion around her home pasture so we were certain about the breed dates.) We waited ... AND WAITED ... she foaled three days short of carrying that foal a whole year! A month overdue! and me sleeping in the barn EVERY SINGLE ONE of those extra nights. :th
 
Ha! I remember one of those, she actually went a day or two beyond a year. Then had a little peanut of a foal!

Had another one that showed NONE of the signs, she was purchased at a high-end auction by my boss. The seller got into a snit when she brought in only 5 figures instead of 6, and didn't arrange for this in advance. He mounted a futile legal battle for the mare, and wouldn't give info as to breeding dates.

She went out with a few other mares, and didn't come in for breakfast one day. The first thought was that she was stolen from the pasture! We found her and her foal in a little dip in the pasture that couldn't be seen from the gates. The mare I just lost after 21.5 years was her next foal. I was very fortunate to be able to own such a champagne horse on a beer budget!
 
I can just picture the grin on that cow's face as you massage her and lather her up!!! :lol:

Hopefully all will go well and mama and baby will be fine....sounds like she is doing much better with all that TLC.
 
She is....she is really liking her pasture and daily brushings and attention. She is slowly filling out a little, even in just one week. Her udder is getting more enormous by the day and her back teats are full....only a little time more for the whole shebang to be ready for this calf. She's starting to show some mild aggression to the dog when he comes near, so she must be getting closer to calving.

She seems to get a little lonely, which I hope will be solved with the calf and the lamb. She likes it when we come out and sit in her paddock and tries to stay as close as possible. Sometimes too close....she loves Eli and likes to lick and nuzzle him! :lol: Animals really take to that boy, I tell you. I'M the one who brings her sweet feed morning and evening and HE'S the one she's loving up on? :rolleyes: Typical.....

Gearing up to start milking and I think she will be much easier to milk than my old Holstein, the cow from Hades. She was so mean that she wouldn't let her milk down for an earthquake....she was a tough one to milk. :(
 
The tough ones are a pain to milk...they can hurt ya big time.

yea I have to remember animals have no "feelings" truly about "what we" do for them..HA HA.........I remembered Peepers my horse that was treated to perfection, great riding horse but once loose in the field, she wouldn't know me....what a battle just to catch her!!! LOL


You got a cow that loves the good life..smart cow..HA HA
 
AH, Bee, I was hoping to read she calved...LOL...but I guess if she had calved, your title to your journal would have changed! :P That's what I'm watching for...title changes!!
 
Sad day here at Sweetwater...... :(

Last night it frosted and the tomatoes that I thought were protected got killed. Some survived but the majority of them roasted. These were the ones I raised from seedlings and had placed outside to harden off several days ago.

Now I will have to buy some at the greenhouse and they will have all been picked over and I will wind up with a variety that I do not want. Dang it! :hit

It was a blow, to be sure. I'm sure it will all work out but I hated to see something I had nursed into being get killed all in one night. That is the first time I let this happen....I should have checked them and wetted them down this morning. I was right there and didn't think about it because I was aggrevated with the cow. Mind on other things.

The cow had torn through my electric fencing and had it in several pieces. I still do not know why, as the fence was getting fire. I don't know if she got startled in the middle of the night and just blundered into it and got tangled, or what, but it was a mess this morning. Its fine now.

All things for a reason.......

Its supposed to frost again tonight and it doesn't look like it will ever warm up here enough to germinate anything. No one has a garden put in at all here except potatoes, lettuce and onions...and the onions all rotted. I'm sure the potatoes did too.

The cow is on her 7th paddock with 9 more to go before she is back to the original. The chickens aren't even waiting for her manure to dry before they have it scratched out thinly into the grass. My beautiful yard is now full of "skid marks" and my chickens all are wearing green "boots"! :lol:
 
Ahh... the joys of farming!

So sorry to hear about your seedlings. Most of my tomatoes are still sitting there looking shell shocked by the continued cool weather. Don't give up on the potatoes just yet. I thought mine were doomed then suddenly up they came.
 
I am so sorry to hear about your seedlings. On an up note, after reading about several of your having lost various seedlings, I checked the forecast for the next 10 days and am super glad that I am starting seedlings now. Downside is the insanely high temps we had today and the next 2 days (90's). I'll be back to more normal temps soon.
