black walnut processing

My husband claimed they were easier to shell if they were wet, so he soaked them in a bucket of water and shelled them while he was watching a football game. I stuck them in the fridge until I could do something with them and they got green and furry.

I've done the pour them in the driveway and run over them thing and it worked great. i also let them dry for a couple of weeks after just because my then 85+year old neighbor told me to. lol, she didn't say why, just said that's how you do it. i was 25 and she was 85 so i did it and they were fine. done it that way for the last 40 years. maybe to dry the nut meat some to make them easier to get out of the shell? i don't know??

Interesting on the soaking method, Britsea. Do you have to worry about the stain still? I didn't wash these but I guess they were dry enough that I didn't get black fingers.

I don't know much about processing black walnuts, but I can add that soaking doesn't remove the staining. I used to have a black walnut tree and made ink by soaking whole black walnuts in the husk. I tried to remove the husk on one after the extended soak - what a mess! LOL
