Can you section off an area just for the 2 of them?
 
After DS removed the eggs and nest, Suzie finally started rejoining the flock with Titipu. Last night when we went to close things up mama and baby were ensconced under the coop while everyone else was inside. I left things like that for the night; this morning things started out fine, but 2 hours later we found the baby, chilled and collapsed again. Momma would come over and quack at it and waggle her tail and then march off a bit, then come back. She didn't seem to understand that the baby was cold and couldn't keep up. So Titipu is back in the house again, under my chin- trying to warm up.
I think it's just too late in the season- too cold for a baby to be out there. I'm going to set up a little pen for her so she can go outside when the weather is warm enough (supposed to reach 80 today, which might be ok for a week old) but she will be brought indoors for the night when it cools down.
 
I have enjoyed reading this thread. I haven't been around much, I have been busily wild crafting herbs, rose hips, elderberries and mountain ash berries, some more mullein and Yarrow too. Just got a batch of my herbal astringent/topical I call Ultra Heal, going. We are also scoring some mullein plants to see about the resin. Not sure how that will turn out. We had a killing frost a week ago and even though I covered my beds, everything is gone. : / I don't like that part.

My son found an old abandoned apple tree. Good apples! We made an apple picker out of a pop bottle and a mop handle. We will see how it works soon.

We had ducks, just a pair, years ago. They imprinted on me and so everywhere i went they were with me. If I went in the house, they stayed on the porch and cried (and pooped a lot). When they were a year old, I finally had enough and found them a home with a very enticing pond. I keep expecting them to show back up on the porch looking for their "Mama".
 
Maybe I don't want ducks! It's bad enough I have the goats yelling maaaaaa!
 
I don't think Titipu will imprint with me- she spent the first 24 hours with momma before everything went wobbly and pear shaped.

Every morning when she hears the other ducks outside she starts her "I'm lost!" peeping and the others all crowd around the windows and call to her. I feel so bad about keeping her separate, but I'm afraid she will die if I don't keep her inside during the cold hours.

The older ducks tend to ignore us unless I'm holding The Bucket; then they come running because they know treats are at hand.

What do you do with the mountain ash berries? We have one at my mother's old house and the birds get drunk on the berries and are hilarious to watch, but I've never tried to harvest them myself.
I'm waiting for the first frost before I start gathering our rose hips. It hasn't happened yet, but it will be soon, I can tell. I need to get the rest of my peppers and squash before it's too late.
 
Britesea I'm coming to dinner with hqueen and i don't mind doing the dishes after. when you live alone it isn't really much fun to cook for yourself and i am guilty of not taking very good of myself cooking wise. i will make a "one pot" meal and eat on that till its gone and then make something new. poor baby duck i hope she grows feathers soon. DenimDeb this is how spoiled my ducks are. they have actually banged on the glass on my door to get me to come out and feed them. might be a problem if they weren't so amusing. mama duck daphnee is setting on yet another clutch of eggs right now. she has another couple of weeks to go. i hope it isn't to cold for babies by then. this was her idea not mine so we'll see how it goes.

It could be worse! It could be a pony. Stormy is about as subtle as a brick wall. If I have the horses in the parking area, and haven't remember to rope off the area in front of my tack shed, he will go and stand in front of the door until I feed him.
 
so right, it could be ponys. had a saddle horse mare when i was a kid that would come on in the house with the rest of us. poor mom, God rest her soul, would yell at the group and we would exit post haste, laughing as we went.
