Britesea - Living the good life in rural Oregon

Reminds me I need to talk to S and make sure I don't miss out on the cider that he gets from an organic apple farm. It's so good!

Hubs desperately wants to make hard cider this year. Me, not so much :p My one attempt at ACV was a miserable failure - If you try and it works out for ya, please post how you did it?! All the fruits and veggies around here are running WAY behind. I just finished dehydrating peppers, which are usually finished by the end of August/beginning of September! Everybody keeps saying the apples won't be ready until late October! That's not good, since we often have snow starting by Halloween!

yea on the apple juice. i use apple juice in my raw smoothies i make for breakfast.

We bought a couple of inexpensive oil lamps to put up in the kitchen for blackouts, which seem to be happening more often these days. lamp.jpg I've decided that the reflector is too dark, so i'll be gluing a round piece of aluminum foil to it, which should add more light when I need it.

I ended up buying some TSP and a sponge as well- while we were putting up the lamps I realized the ceiling is not white anymore! (It's been at least 10 years since I last cleaned it). I'm not sure when I'll have the time to clean it- I've got garlic, shallots, and peppers to process as well as those apples.

Britesea, where did you get those lamps?!!!! I love that style and, while I have a couple, I'd love to find more of them.

Lehman's sells them. They normally cost $20, but they had a sale in late August for $10 each. This is the same style we had in California, and I can tell you they can really put out the light for just simple oil lamps.

Lovely! I like the kind that suit on the table better, but I am sure that style puts out better light with the reflector on it.
Blackouts are no fun!

I try to avoid oil lamps on the table in the kitchen- too easy to tip them over.

DH has an appointment with the Orthopods today; we are hoping the pins will come out and maybe he'll be able to start using that hand. It's been 3 months now, since the accident, and he is so tired of only having one hand! The other guys at his work are probably really tired of this too.

I need to get out to the garden today after the appointment, and start bringing in the ripe peppers and such. It's supposed to get down to 36 tomorrow night, and I don't know how much longer before a killing frost. I have a few more Tromboncino squashes that look mature enough for storage, and just enough beets left for a good pot of borscht. The kale and broccoli should be good for a while longer, possibly all winter if I get the covers on in time.
