Building a little yard pond

i can't quite tell from the photo, but is it at least 18" deep in there? otherwise raccoons will come and eat all your fish and destroy all your plants. i learned this the hard way last year. =/

Farmgirlpastandfuture, it's REALLY lovely!! Congratulations on your hard work--hope you didn't get TOO many blisters, in the process. Metalsmitten is right about the raccoons, plus in our neck of the woods (IL and MO) it CAN freeze fairly deep. You'll want it at LEAST 18 inches (NOT feet--sorry, edit)deep for your fish so that they don't freeze in the winter. I have a friend with a Koy pond, and that's what he's done.

I really like your pond actually so much so i hopw to copy your idea for our pet turtles! Would you fance in turtles with bird netting so that they wouln't get aten? Also do you need a pump for a small pond?

We travel quite a bit for our work and spend around 7 weeks in Jan-Mar in FL so I expect to drain this for the coldest part of the winter. It does have some really good rock overhangs for the fish to hide under and behind - the 8 we put in there have been pretty good at dodging behind the rocks - so we'll see. The deep end is probably around 16" - pretty mild winters for the most part here in the Branson area. We've been adding plants around it so I'll have to take a new photo. It is under a tree which I know is bad and I've already had to scoop tree seed pods out of it - but even if I have to move it and rebuild it in 2 years its so much nicer to look at than that pile of clay dirt.
