Our basement is scary! It's not finished but It's fine if we had a tornado. When I'm down there I have to tuck my nose and mouth into my shirt because of the musky moldy smell. It's sorta damp. My neighbors have an outside hidy hole aka storm shelter in the ground and she puts her cannings in there. What are the recomendations for storing your cannings?

If you're not going to try to store them 'forever' they should be fine with fairly humid conditions, IME. Take the screwbands off first. And wipe the jar, including threads, off very thoroughly before using is (so that crud from the basement doesn't get into your kitchen or hands or food)

Have fun,

Pat

Keep an eye on your stuff. The lids and metal cans can rust through if your basement is humid.

If you can you should do try to reduce the humidity level by sealing the walls, floor, and adding ventilation if it is practical.
