Anyone else read the column in Organic Gardening magazine about canning lids that have bisphenol-A in the process? I wonder if BPA is the same chemical that was recently warned about microwaving baby bottles. According to the article bisphenol-A is an industrial chemical used to make polycarbonate plastics and the epoxy resins that line many food containers. BPA is an estrogenic chemical that can mimic the hormone estrogen. The article did say the food was safe if it didn't touch the lid. Boy, that made me feel better! :woot

Yes, it really irritated me, since one of my motivations for canning is to avoid that kind of thing in my food. I only comfort myself with the idea that I am at least reducing it dramatically, and if the jar is stored upright, the contact is only there possibly in the canner when it is boiling under pressure, and not for months and months. Sheesh. It is impossible to avoid it all in today's world. Reduce is my buzzword.

The article did mention using glass lids w/ rubber rings. We see those in antique shops. It's almost like going back in time. It's scary what goes into our children from birth. I guess we just have to do the best we can.

It is inconceivable to me that you would get any MEANINGFUL amount of BPA offa canning lids. The food is not in contact with them, except possibly very briefly and partially when the contents are all aflutter during canning.

Heck of a lot safer, I wll betcha anything, that what is in your wellwater or rainwater or tapwater, or air, or the dust around your house.
