Welcome Chelsea! What branch of service is your DH in? I was Navy (looong time ago). Hooray for cloth diapers! I did that, and I also remember what wonderful dish towels they were when the kids didn't need them anymore.
Cooking from scratch takes more time, but it's amazing how much money you can save. Same with canning etc. I just finished canning up 3 loads of carrots (9 pints dilled, 9 pints glazed, and 9 pints regular)... considering that I haven't seen canned carrots for less than 70 cents a can (and the dilled ones are outrageously high), and I paid $7.68 for 25 lbs of carrots for this- I figure I saved a minimum of $6 even with the can lids counted in.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing more of your story!

Hi!
DH is in the Marines. I wish I'd be able to use my cloth diapers as dish cloths but they aren't flat. They are the more modern ones that look like a disposable diaper. I have made my own diapers though. I've also made and sold some. When the hubby and u get our own house and start a garden, I want to start canning! I would do it now but I don't have the stuff to do it with and we are trying to save money for our move and then our house! I really hope we get the one we want!

I think the flat diapers they sell nowadays are really thin and cheap; they wouldn't work for a baby at all. Making your own is a good idea. The thing I liked about the flat diapers was you could fold them different ways to fit the baby, and double them up for night time etc. Hard to save money these days, with everything getting more expensive. One thing I like to do is make my own "convenience foods", like onion soup mix, or rice mixes, and my own laundry soap. One of these days I plan on getting some lye and try making my own soap as well.

LOL, I'm going to have to open my own Kitchen thread at this rate!

Here's the recipe. I found it online, but I can't remember the site.

DRY ONION SOUP MIX
3/4 cup instant minced onion
1/3 cup beef bouillon powder
4 teaspoons onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed celery seed
1/4 teaspoon sugar
Directions:

Combine all ingredients and store in an airtight container.
About 5 tablespoons of mix are equal to 1 1¼-ounce package.

To make onion dip: Mix 5 tablespoons with one pint of sour cream.

Wow. That's cool that you make your own mixes!
