I have many friends with ducks and chickens. Ducks seem to make better prey. While it can be easy to lose a chicken to a fox as well, ducks just seem better at getting killed. Just my observation. May not be true.
I've had this experience too! Of all the birds we've had, somehow the ducks "get it" first. My mom has a bunch of chickens and one lonely drake. For some reason, the coyotes don't want him. Oh, and our pen is open during the day, they get eaten at night. The ducks don't go in the safe hen house with the chickens.

I have both but they are all too young to lay so I can't address egg issues.
As for personalities...my chickens are much friendlier than the ducks. I chose the chick based on egg laying & personality traits....I got 3 black Australorpes and 3 EEs. All are friendly. On my list for next spring are a couple off Buff Orps and Barred Rocks to add to my little flock.

The duck breed I chose is known for being quiet and for their prolific egg laying. However the bred I chose is fairly skittish but they are fun to have around and to watch.

Now if you live with a neat freak...beware of ducks they are messy!
