I will finish chickens this week. Tentative delivery is Saturday. One dead one Saturday morning, 22 left. Gulping down last of coffee, then out the door to do chores and get chickens on ice.

I got all 22 chickens on ice Monday, plus one itty bitty chicken that never grew. I’ll drop it in a pot and cook for the dogs. I was exhausted. A friend came over and we killed a bottle of wine. I was still sore, but no longer cared.

I got only 6 chickens in the freezer yesterday and ran out of cut your own size bags off the roll. Had to go to town for more, then to Atwoods for dog food. Got home, I lost my mo-jo and cooked a ribeye. I have 16 chickens to go and I’ll be done.

I got the rest of the chickens in the freezer yesterday. I put the TV on 70’s rock and roll and be-bopped, danced and sang along. It sure made chicken processing easier! No more chickens, all done! I’ll give the final report after I deliver them.

Total pounds 565.8
Average weight 6 pounds 4 ounces

There were 25 in the 5-6 pound range, 4 overachievers over 8 pounds, the rest were 6 to 7. 14 pounds

Total expenses $671.80
That includes a load of dirt at $150 plus some durable equipment that I can use again.

Feed was $347.05

Hard to get a true cost because my friend that gave me the show chicken culls also gave me lots of feed.

Total sales $2734
$528 of that went towards a trip to Greece in September of 2026, next year.

My 2 freezers are crammed with chicken. I wrote customers names on the bags so I won’t get them mixed up. A lady at the post office wants some chicken too, I told her after I deliver next week, I will have some left.

Delivery yesterday, 2 1/2 hours north of me. It took both of my huge coolers, 2 smaller coolers and 2 small styrofoam coolers. I loaded the big coolers in the back of the truck, taking 10 halves in my laundry basket at a time. It took over an hour to get all loaded up. My customer, Belinda, always wants feet, fat, scraps, livers, hearts, gizzards, so I pounded her. I kept my share of scraps, livers, hearts and gizzards, but gave her all the feet. I would have kept some for broth, but honestly I just don’t have time. I have lots of chicken backs and will make broth with them, then can the backs for the dogs. Her neighbor Bert was delighted with his 10 chickens, also split in halves. They gave me $30 towards fuel, which i appreciated.

Chicken season is done.

Now I need to drag everything out of my 2 upright freezers, straighten and organize everything. Clorox spray coolers, wipe clean, leave open to air out, then put them away in the portable building.

I gave my DD and family 65 pounds of boneless skinless breast, leg quarters, buffalo wings, ground chicken and chicken pan sausage. I have enough for my needs, and have a little to sell to post office lady. Probably get an order from her next year.

Taking away the cost of dirt, still have most of it left, which will go elsewhere, and the durable equipment, I cleared $2,000. Yeah, a lot of work, but not bad.

My sister IL lives in Greece. She has lived there for 50yrs. Her husband was a Crete.
DH and two daughters are going to Athens for two weeks in a week.

Yeah....honestly with cost of chicks, cost of feed, time & trouble, you can buy on sale for equal or less. May not be as large but, way less trouble.

I use a heavy type bird in my flock. They go broody. Plus I have an incubator. Really the roos get a real nice size for chicken meats. Not the big breasted of CCX but just fine...as you know, egg hatches are not all pullets gotta remove excess roos somehow. I have 6 I'm ready to pen & feed out thru Dec. Then harvest. Already nice sized, they free range & are fed scratch everyday, just fatten a touch more.
