coyotes kill girl

We are constantly on the look out for coyotes around my house. We are not fenced in, not that it would help if I was. Just last week we had a howler on my back porch which is right off my bedroom. Then sure enough his howl was followed up by a huge pack of yippers. Probably on the clear acre behind my house.

They know I have chickens and stop by every now and again to see if the run is open.

I have had them looking in the windows before when we HAD cats. Lost them both to the coyotes.

I have seen a cougar walk through our property my husband did not believe me though. It was in 2002. there was still quite a few open fileds around me then. Scary it was.

Most walkers and joggers around here carry a big stick or golf club while out.

I feel for the girl and her family. Very sad. Are they sure they were coyotes?

If I remember correctly(and my memory can be shoddy at times, not in the mood to reread the article), the article states she died of injuries. So she was probably alive when they found her, doesn't say if she was concious or not.

If she was found alive, chances are someone heard her screaming and intervened or she was able to get up in a tree. Unless they follow up on the article, we won't know. :/

I can't see her "running" to safety, especially if she sustained enough injury to die. Predators know when their prey is weakened or injured, I'm fairly sure they would not have just "given up" once they wounded her that badly.

It is sad to think that someone lost a family member or that this girl experienced the fear of being alone in the woods being attacked by a pack of predators. :(

My daughter has about a 400 yard walk to get to her bus stop. She saw A coyote last week on her walk to the bus. It is really dark when her bus comes (waiting on day light savings time!) so since then I've been taking her. I only did it b/c she was really scared, I NEVER thought that coyotes could/would do this. Thanks for sharing the story. I'm glad I listened to the fear in her voice.

I really worried about bears more and carry mace for them when I go on my walks out in the forest...now I will also be aware of coyotes too.

ETA: I don't carry mace, I meant pepper spray. :D

I didn't say that I have the utmost confidence that due to my intense preparations, nothing could ever possibly happen to me. I am simply stating that being prepared is important, and when within my abilities to do so, I will. That part is under my control. Reading anything else into it is putting words into my mouth. :)
Oh dear- I wasn't thinking about your response at all- I thought your response about being careful with your children was right on. Sorry to have phrased it poorly. :/
I wholeheartedly and sincerely apologize for misinterpreting you post! :( :hugs :hide
If that was towards me - Let me assure you, those 40+ multiple weapons and reloading room would be more likely used against me than to protect me. Currently the only 'weapon' I ever wear is a pocket knife, and that most likely wouldn't do me much good. But I guess if I die, I die. lol.

No, it wasn't directed at you. It was directed at the person that I quoted, and I have since learned that I took the post that was directed at, wrong :)

Sorry, I meant to quote all of it, including the person you quoted, who I meant to direct it to. I realize you weren't talking about me, sorry.

That's okay! :weee :weee

So, we had this thread yesterday, and last night I heard a pack of coyotes yelping up the valley, probably a half mile away. First I've heard them since around late winter. Gave me the willies. :hide

yea it makes you think in a different light the true predators in the area.
we all think---we got the critters around, but they won't do anything...LOL...well maybe they might. Wild animals are just that. On the hunt and prowl and we must listen.

I brought the subject up to a friend of ours who has bees about putting electric fence around his hives.

He has 4-5 hives right up next to his house. Said he went out one morning, and there were "perfect" bear tracks walking right through his yard. He lives in a small community of 4-5 houses, and next to other communties containing oh, probably a hundred or so houses. He is only a few miles from my house, I would have NEVER EVER EVER(!!!!) thought we had to deal with bears where we are. EVER!!

It definately put me in awe, that a bear(and he said a big'un) would be living in between communities. We'll be building an electric fence around the garden(where the bee hives are going), both to keep our animals out and to deter bears. Just the thought, that there is a big bear in our area is just shocking!
