There are all sorts of books out there about home haircutting, but none that I have found about cutting your own hair, particularly for women.

I'd love any recs. I did find a YouTube video about using a razor (like a plastic, disposable face/leg shaver) to take of split ends, and that works really well.

Anyone?

I had gotten some pretty hideous hair cuts as a teen and finally figured "Hey! I can look like total crap for free!" so I started cutting my own hair. Nobody has pointed at me and ran away screaming in terror, so I must not be doing too bad of a job :D

You could just be a big cheater like Abi and let your hair grow down to your butt. It's pretty easy to trim your hair when it is that long :D

I've tried this idea. While I can snip my bangs a little, I really suck at cutting hair. My hair is curly so it is forgiving, but I just go to a local walk-in el-cheapo place.

I say try it, and if you are no good, find someone who IS and barter with them. Doesn't have to be a haircutter in a fancy salon. Although for many years I bartered minor babysitting with a neighbor who did hair at a real fancy place and I got all our hair done for free that way for the price of babysitting her (nice) children. So you might find more than one way to get hair cut for free. Our hair looked great then!

I tried doing everyone's hair and they all looked horrible and I had a book and the right supplies. I just don't have a talent for it. However, the neighbor's 17-year-old son uses trimmers just like ours and does a great job doing my younger son's hair, so don't be afraid to have different members of the family try their hand at it.

I'd grown mine long, but was starting to get headaches when I had to ponytail it (from the weight of it) so I cut it off. :weee So much better.

I used to cut it myself when it was short and now I can have it look good in a minute, instead of taking 3 - just to get the knots out, then having to be all sweaty necked or to do a braid and up where it still looked like I had short hair (except from the back).

I tried cutting my own hair once. Never again. But then again, there's a place just a couple of miles from here that does it for $8.00, and I normally only get it cut a couple of times a year, so it's not that bad a deal for me.

OK, I'll admit it. Back in the days when my kids were little and I didn't have as much money I bought a gizmo off TV to cut my own hair. I wore it short and liked it, but I have always HATED the beauty parlor. Can't stand it. So, I bought a kind of trimmer that hooks up to your vacuum (I used a shop vac) and basically sucked your hair into the clippers and it would clip your hair off at whatever lenght you set it at- same length hair all over your head, so a layered look. It looked fine, it was easy, and it was cheap! And NO BEAUTY PARLOR :woot I can't think of what it is called now. When I met my SO, she was horrified at the whole concept (she who loves her hair dresser...), and when we moved I was talked into getting rid of the gizmo. I still miss it. I have since grown my hair out long so I don't have to cut it except once a year or so to take down the 10 inch excess, and I have my SO do that for me. Just cut the damn stuff across the shoulder blades.

I sort of miss short hair- it was so easy and comfortable.

LOL at all of you!

My cousin and my stepson's mom both live downstate, they are both professional and give me great haircuts. But we've lived here since '05 and I cannot find someone to cut my hair that does a reasonable job.

I'm with WifeZilla- I can look like crap for free. So I've started cutting it myself. So far, so good, it looks okay, but I'd like to learn more about it. My hair is naturally wavy, at my bra strap or below, very thick, and has to be cut in layers or I end up with triangle head.
