So what are the best tv shows and movies that give good lessons about why you need to be self sufficient?

Fictional or otherwise.

Jericho. Very realistic portrayal of people and society in the event of a nuclear war.

Little House on the Prairie? Good lessons on homesteading without gas and electric?

"Panic In The Year Zero" One of the best low budget films from the 1960s. Good acting and drama with almost no special effects. A man and his wife and daughter flee from a nuked Los Angeles. It's one of the best TSHTF movies i've seen. I highly recommend looking for it online from a free torrents site. Humans at their worst and finest.

Burn Notice
good spy lessons and important knowledge like not wasting time trying to break in to a fortified door, but just break through the flimsy siding and drywall next to it
