They really are. I've had a lot of involved roosters, too.

I hatched 20 mixed chicks a few months back. I gave 10 to the neighbors, sold 5 and kept 5. Don't know the sex breakdown on the 5 I sold but the 10 I gave to the neighbors turned out to be 9 pullets and 1 roo. The 5 I kept for myself - 4 roos and 1 pullet. Sigh.... never fails, lol!

Wife needs to stop sending me to town

She asked me: "What kind of chickens are those?" I said: these chickens? They are the best kind, 50 cent chickens, that lay eggs. I did flip them over on their back in the palm of my had and all these pulled both feet up tight, so they are all hens. There were a lot of roos in those two tubs.

I'll have to remember the flipping the chick over trick...

I don't regret giving away the pullets to the neighbors. The chicks were for the kids and they picked the ones they wanted. But - the next time I want to buy some chicks - I'm taking my neighbor kids and they can pick out the chicks for me, lol!

They calm their butt down after a few seconds of being upside down. Then see what they do with their feet.

Started today . 6/2 hatch. Layer pullets, freezer roos.

that is the extent of my chick-n knowledge...

A pullet is an immature hen. These eggs are all layer types, some pure marans, some Rhode Island reds, some cream legbars...and a few are mixes of those.

Think heifer to cow. Pullet to hen.

I didn't incubate any last yr. Couple broodies gave me a few. This yr I decided to re energize from home, given usual prices of chicks being high -- IF you could even find them. At this months auction I lucked out on some eggs for heavy breeds at only $7 for the dozen ( some bidders were sleeping!). New bloodlines. Then felt the effort should be bigger for time & chick care involved -- added my own flock eggs for more work for me For any roos hatched, then freezer fill will happen. I've already added another roo to flock with buying 5 pullets & one will be a roo. That's great actually -- I love buff orpingtons. So I can then hatch purebred.
