Egg Hatching and Keeping Chickens

Last fall, I gave the neighbor the rickety mobile coop thing the previous owner left for us. The grandpa rebuilt and strengthened it, and they have a small flock. I now get to hear egg songs in the morning. If I can get the garden going, I will check to see if I can give trimmings to her to feed to the flock.

Well— I had given hen 6 eggs on Monday,,


Well she did sit on the nest most of the day but I went out about 6pm and she was not on the nest, she had gotten back up in the nesting box.
So I took the eggs and put them in the kitchen.



Now it’s Wednesday—
And I gave her another set of eggs, 5 of them. 5 fit better under her than 6. I let her stay up in the nesting box and put the eggs under her. I won’t make her go to the dog crates nest just yet

So we’ll see how she does

The neighbors let their small flock out to forage this afternoon. Was surprised to see them outside my office window. They were BUSY! Made me smile.

And for the first time in almost 15 years, I have chicken poop in my grass. Love it.

Broody 2026 is still on her new nest, I wont move her to the dog crate yet.

Its been cool. so I draped a beach towel down the back and right side of the nesting box it keep it warmer. she did get herself off the nest yesterday. I was in the garden when I heard broody cluck'n. She was getting a roll in the dirt, ate and drank. When I thought she had been off long enough I herded her back into the coop and got her nestled back on the nest.

So, you think that you know better than her about the egg hatching?? nope, she has better genetics for that. Let her be. When it's warmer, they can/do stay off just a little longer...esp in last half of set.

Ive got just over a week on the eggs under my broody. I plan to buy a couple chicks to give her as well
