I have no idea, but my more recent motto is slow and steady. I used to push myself harder at swim and my goal was to move up in the line (speedies are first) now I am slow and steady Betty....and I am cool with that. No matter whether we are swimming 25 meters or 400 I relax and enjoy it.

Maybe that is the better way to approach the gym. Maybe ease up on the weights (assuming that is what you mean) and see if that helps. Are you letting your back heal completely or are you heading back to the gym ASAP?
