I saw this picture in one of my old forestry books. I believe it was taken around the turn of the century. All I can say is, men were men back then.

If you zoom in you can see the tree was girted, so its coming down. That's got to be like the longest wooden ladder I've ever seen. The firewood from that tree probably heated several home over the winter.

Pretty amazing photo if you ask me.

There is a small, private college in Wisconsin that offers a class in tree trimming as part of their horticultural program. They had a picture similar to that - only with the students up in the tree. They were learning how to climb, use ropes for safety and controlled limb lowering.

For some reason that reminds me of the picture circulating on the web of a bunch of goats up in a tree, browsing. LOL
