FarmerJamie - A new beginning

Well, it's lunch time - I convinced the girls to harvest the rest of the beets (got about 1/2 bushel after trimming), 1/2 bushel of scallions (going into the dehydrator), a bunch of ornamental gourds, about a dozen pumpkins, and about two dozen sunflower heads.

I've been digging out the foundation for the new coop and digging trenches to lay drainage pipes. The first four inches of soil is nice and rich, but sitting on clay, so the surface is literally like a sponge. Trying my best to avoid "poop soup" in the new runs. We'll see.

Time to get back to it.

What will you be doing with the pumpkins? We are getting ours tomorrow......

Seeds - roasted, rest of the guts to the hens.

Some of the pumpkins the kids will make jack o'lanterns, the rest I will use to make pumpkin bread and freeze the loaves.

I've been alternating between harvesting and duck pen cleaning. I think I am going to harvest the pumpkins so I can cover that bed with a layer of yucky duck straw. Looks like I will get 1 normal shaped pumpkin and 4 HHUUUGGEEEEE blue hubbards. I think the biggest one has to be at least 35 lbs!

I roast the pumpkins, bag and freeze the meat. Then they get used for low carb soup & stew thickener, muffins, etc...

The seeds get roasted, but my recipe calls for leaving the guts and goo on the seeds. Kind of a bummer for the ducks, be we really like extra "stuff" on our pumpkin seeds.

We keep our pumpkins and squashes for as long as possible, last year we had a pumpkin make it in storage till Christmas when we made it into a pie :drool

Got a recipe for the pumpkin bread? I've never made that, although I've done zucchini.

Didn't I read that pumpkin seeds are used for de-worming goats? How would one prepare the seeds? just dry them? Or did I mis-read?

I just feed them fresh and raw. The goats love them.
