Because a flash of insight when I was grooming dogs. A tool wasnt sharp enough and I was struggling. I muttered the saying while putting it down to switch tools. Aha! That's exactly what it meant originally!

Dogs always seem to know where you are going, get in front of you, walk slow and stop, wanting to get petted.
