Food dehydrator questions

How hard would it be to make one from scratch? Anyone have any plans for making one?
 
I just picked up an American Harvest snackmaster from CL for $10! I love that it has the thermostat.

Question for those of you that have one, is it supposed to have just an open hole in the lid? Or is it supposed to have a vent covering of some sort? The picture that ORChick posted makes it look like just a hole which is what mine has but it looks like some of the newer ones have a vented screen?

Mine has an open column down through the center, with no covering. It needs to be open to vent the warm, damp air.
