Do you buy organic oranges? I'd be worried about pesticides...

i'm old enough now that anything in such small amounts is unlikely to be a problem. also i don't do this very often... i guess they could be washed, i think they're washed before they get waxed or coated (with whatever they normally put on oranges - i've never seen a dirty orange in my life).

Monday, I got informed that we are making changes at the food bank where I volunteer. Starting in November, I'm to watch addresses (I'm the computer gal and I get their names in the car lineup). If they have other than our local small suburbs addresses (Battle Ground, Brush Prairie, Amboy, Heisson, Lewisville), I'm to tell that starting in the new year, we will no longer be able to serve them.

We get tons of folks from Vancouver, which is a huge city and has five pantries alone. Many folks make the rounds to all the food banks every month. Its simply not sustainable. With the loss of millions in federal budget, govt layoffs, and then the upcoming loss of SNAP, our process is not sustainable. I, for one, am in total agreement. I hate seeing the abuse every Monday when I work.

I know of people who make twice what we have coming in that hit all the food banks around here. They don't need it, they just are entitled and think they should get everything free.

Mom said my SIL was talking about hitting food banks now. I know for a fact they get well over twice what we have and are in a low cost of living area. She's just a spendthrift. My brother has complained about money issues before because of her spending habits.

Don't even get me started with the certain immigrants who show up in their Tesla's, then argue they didn't get enough. Or have their Prada purses over their shoulder driving a Range Rover. Or try to hide the haul they have already gotten from another pantry, when they pull up to ours.

Using the USDA chart on income (2 SS monthly payments), I'm eligible for a food bank haul. But I don't need it.

So much abuse.

My parents are eligible. Mom's got a box of dry goods from the senior center maybe a dozen times in the last 5 years. They also donate items to the senior center's yards sale when they can that help provide the food.

I know they are low on certain items right now and I am going to ask discreet questions to get an idea on what they need for winter. We take our last trip to see them until late spring next month. Already planning a couple cases of canned milk and the gluten free mushroom soup because casseroles are some of the things Dad can eat.

I'll chat with my other brother who lives close enough to them and he'll check on them.

It's a fact -- there are abusers. Yet those who need help deserve it and proving each can be difficult. Don't get me wrong, there are some at each end who are obvious (!!!needy, not needy) but, those "entitled" ones need to stay home. The elders are a concern because many just won't admit how they need things -- some don't eat well by choice and don't even know it. some can't even get to food distributions.

Life can be tough.

Abusers of the systems, yeah. Worst part of doing Toys for Tots distributions over the years was overhearing the people in line discussing techniques for scamming the charities in town for toys to then take to Walmart to return for cash. The truly grateful got represented less and less each year
