From the shop to the kitchen... => new gadget / toy

Well, I thought y'all might like this. I was working in my shop on another project that left me with some scrap oak that was almost too small to keep, but I HATE tossing good wood. So I scrounged up some scrap rosewood and then a little walnut from some old piece of furniture that I had saved. Out of the scrap bin appeared this really nice cutting board! I forget the exact measurements, but it's about 11" x 16".... That's a 8' chef's knife sitting on the board for reference.

I am very happy with how it came out, granted I have a rather full shop at home, but I am just a hobbyist all the same. Now I can toss out the cheap junky ones my wife has kicking around!

Here's a photo after I gave it a good soaking with mineral oil. I almost hate to use it now!

PS, do you think I should add some rubber feet so it can sit on the counter and stay dry, or leave it as is? I might keep it out on the counter.

My DH says to put rubber feet on the bottom and use solid brass screws so they won't rust. That's a BEAUTIFUL cutting board!

Very nice! I have a big heavy wooden one that I leave on my counter. It looks pretty, and i use it so many times a day. I need to have one on the counter--so my vote is for rubber feet!

Thanks, I think it will receive a set of feet, although I would use stainless steel over brass, brass will still corrode.

I seem to have so many "unfinished project's" in the shop right now, it sure was nice to have one start and finish so fast. PLUS it went flawless, well almost... I did have to run it thru a friends planer because mine will only take a 10" wide board. A quick trip to his shop after church made fast work of it though~

That's great! You should suggest this as a homemade gift in the "homemade gifts" thread just started today. Lots of people have scrap lumber laying around.

Here is a thought, you could put it on something high enough that it would sit on top of the burners on the stove as more counter space.

I have a (store bought) bamboo one that I only use to cut on one side. The other side is the one I use for display...I wish it was as nice as yours.

Try using just one side and put it on a dish cloth while you use it to keep it from slipping. That is what I do with mine.
