Whew, busy day! Did the normal chores, and spent more time getting ready for the trip.
Got Spooky bred twice more today - then kicked her dramatic ol butt out into the pasture with the rest of the herd. She immediately started making trouble - true to form!
Got extra water buckets in all the pens. I never trust the automatic waterers, so I always add extra water buckets if I'm going away - just in case. Goat and chicken feeders are full, hay racks are full. The dogs will get a good feeding in the morning and then they'll get some big meaty neck bones to occupy themselve while I'm gone. I'll leave out a big bowl of dry food, which they won't touch, just in case....
I'm pretty well packed. Even have shoes! I'm only going to be gone for about 36 hours, (if that) and I've got about 4 changes of clothes....yep - just in case.
I'll top off the goat and chicken feeders and milk the girls first thing in the morning. Then Red and Chocolate Chip will go out in the pasture while I'm gone. Red's babies will keep her milked, and I guess Chocolate Chip will be really glad to see me come home!

Almost Self-Reliant
that's one of the reasons I don't like to go anywhere overnight. I feel I have to pack everything I own, and prepare for any emergency. I so envy those people who can go away for a week and only have a small duffel, or even smaller. :/

I'm one of those that doesn't take a lot. 
In fact, if I do take a large suitcase, it's only for if I buy anything so I have a way to bring it home.

I'm baaaaack!
It was very nice to get away - even just for one night. The hotel room was really nice and the bathroom was to die for! I am keeping the design in mind for the future if I ever get around to re-doing my master bath.
The casino was cold and smoky. DH and I are non-smokers so the smoke was bothersome and I've even got a bit of a sore throat....but nothing that some herbal tea won't take care of. They did have a very nice non-smoking area, but you had to walk through the smoke to get there. It was appreciated though.
We walked out of our room this morning at the same time a gentleman across the hall was leaving. After exchanging pleasantries he asked us if we were leaving the casino with his money. I laughed and said we weren't even leaving with our own money! Of course we lost money, but we limited the amount that we could 'waste'. Also had a scrumptious meal at the steakhouse in the casino. They make a pretty mean martini too. The smallest prime rib (my fav!) was a 16 ounce slab - and I do mean slab. I ate about 4 ounces of it and brought the rest home to the dogs. They scarfed it up and immediately told me I can go away more often as long as I bring them home leftovers!
Went out and checked on all the critters and everybody's good! The geese's water was major YUCK, but at least there was plenty of it left. Still food in all the feeders and hay in all the racks. Found a couple of eggs in weird places where the Barred Hollands hang out so I guess they've finally started laying!. That's a big whoop!
No real farm news to report. I've gotta go out and feed in a bit and pull Red and Chocolate Chip out of the pasture so I can milk in the morning.
The hotel bed was nice (and I wanted to steal all 8 pillows on the bed) but I'll enjoy sleeping in my own room tonight. It's nice to get away, but even nicer to come home.

Today will be a 'catch-up' day. I've got a million things on the 'to-do' list, but if today goes like most other days - I'll only get a few of them done. I need to bring the horses in and let them graze down a couple pens before I get out the mower. I'That's a two-fer! They eat it, which mows it down, and then I don't have to....guess it's a three-fer!
I need to keep an eye on Lil Bit and Spooky. Sometimes does will come back in heat about 5 days after what appears to be a normal heat cycle. It's like the first cycle is practice and they'll show all signs of estrus, accept the buck, but not actually ovulate. If that happens, they will come back in heat 5 days later. During that cycle they generally will ovulate. I know it woud be easier to leave the bucks and does together for at least a week to have that covered, but Short Stuff needs a break! When he's with the bigger does (the ones he can't reach!) he will keep trying to the point of exhaustion - and with the temps we've had this week I would worry about him. Also, when he's busy chasing girls, he's NOT eating. I want him at his peak, with lots of healthy 'swimmers'! Even though both Pygmy's and Nubian's are year round breeders it seems like they release more eggs in the fall. More eggs = more babies! I've had Pygmy babies every month of the year, but more multiple births (at least in my herd) from fall breedings.
We've got to take DH's car in for a front-end alignment this morning. He got all new tires a month or so ago, and gee whiz, within a week he'd hit a LADDER on the freeway. How do you hit a ladder???? He was in pretty heavy traffic when all of a sudden the car in front of him swerved around, guess what, the ladder! He had traffic on both sides of him and couldn't swerve around it.... argh! I'm afraid if we don't get it taken care of that his new tires are going to wear unevenly and have a significantly shorter lifespan. Can't have that!
Oops, can't sit here all morning - need to get outside and milk.

Every once in awhile you'll hear on the traffic reports about all kinds of things on the highway, sofas, mattresses, lumber, etc. At least he didn't get hurt!
