One of the best parts of homesteading is stepping outside and picking food you’ve grown with your own hands. Whether you’ve got rows of vegetables, a small herb patch by the porch, or a mix of fruit trees and berry bushes, every garden tells a story about the homesteader behind it. Some folks keep it simple with easy-to-grow crops, while others experiment with unique or heirloom varieties.

So let’s dig into it together: What are you growing in your garden right now? Do you have a favorite crop that never fails you, or are you trying something new this season? Share your wins, challenges, and maybe even a few tips - because chances are, someone else could use them too.

Just moved into our house about 6-7 months ago. I am starting a greens/salad garden this week. Starting with the ones best for chickens but ones we love also! Spinach, kale, Swiss Chard, collards (of course) and romaine! I'm in western Alabama. We're in zone 8a. We have really good soil but the garden will be in the fenced in area with the chickens (6½ weeks old). They're in a run when we're not at home to be safe. Should I plant them in the ground or a raised bed? What would y'all recommend?

I've had raised beds and inground gardens. I like the raised beds a lot for root crops. There's a lot of clay where I live and the root crops do so much better in the softer dirt of a raised bed. My raised bed space is limited so I plant in-ground for big sprawly crops or just for ones I need to plant more of - like corn and beans. I haven't done a lot of gardening the last couple of years because life got in the way - but I always grow SOMETHING!

Luckily where I want my gardens to be is not clay! I was amazed that the entire yard wasn't clay. Back in the 50s they cleared some of our land to build a house and have a decent yard. There is 6 miles of trees behind my backyard and we're on top of a small mountain. So not much clay going on! Moss grows in the back part of our yard! Very healthy! Thanks for the advice!
