If your roof blows away, the genset wouldn't even fire up. IF it is connected correctly, the feed trip wire would go away with your roof! :gig

Propane refrigeration gets just as cold as electrical refrigeration, it just uses more propane, dollar for dollar, than you would use in electricity.
That's why they say it isn't as efficient.

I'll be sure to let my electrician know that. In any event, after what I saw following Gustave, I will not change to automatic turn-on. Way too many people I know had useless generators, because they all shut down after about 36 hours of continous use.

Well, let me bump this back up to the top.
Update: by tomorrow, DH and I will buy another house....for him. So, he was thinking of buying several items he felt he needs, including a new refrigerator. Well, I'm figuring I can get a gas/propane refrigerator and let him have our old one.
I'm now hoping for gas, with the ability to convert to propane, when and if needed.
I'd appreciate any knowledge from any who may not have previously read this thread.

Don't know about in your area, but I've been hearing that propane is super expensive right now in parts of the country. That might be something you want to look into.

Thats why I want natural gas, with only the possibility of converting to propane, if necessary. I know, cuz the last few times I got refilled, it bit. I did read a few customer reviews, but was hoping someone here had first hand experience, but no biggie. Figured it was worth a try.

I was raised on a propane gas refrigerator made by Servell...it was not frost free, but then none of the fridges were back when that one was made. It kept things cold just as much as an electric fridge. No difference whatsoever.

My ex-husband's grand parents had a Servel refrigerator and it must have 40-50 years old. It ran fine, kept the food cold and the tiny freezer compartment froze ice cubes. It was not frost free, but it didn't matter. The drawbacks to them are that they are small. You would probably need two of them to replace what you have. Before spending that kind of money, check into solar panels with glass-mat batteries for emergency back up that would require you to switch the refrigerator plug to the back up system. A whole house with automatic switch would cost major bucks.

I would invest in a OTG fridge, far more efficient and last 25 years average. Look on Craig's list for one the size needed. I have also thought of a fridge with motor and compressor on top (heat rises) so that it don't heat up what your trying to cool down, then replace the motor with a 24vdc motor and build a insulated pocket for it to slide into. Also use vented cold outside air in winter to keep fridge cold.

I don't know about costs of running either alternative type. But, in past motor homes (about 8 of them) we had no issues when used on propane. Cooled as well as any other.

Two days ago I did buy a used frig, with inside freezer box. While these work ok, I wasn't after freezer. This was great shape, good price and is for milk and eggs! When I open frig & see wall to wall milk.....well, it came to mind that I needed to reclaim my frig!! Soon I will be milking 3 does. It happened at perfect time.
I've been looking for a while. :) I off the breaker on my hot water a day at a time and that will more than pay for this frig elec use....small unit, about 5' tall.
What all do you make with goat milk? My son and I liked a hard goat cheese with herbs mixed inside. I would send some dried chili's from my assortment of around the world. I make home made salsas from mild to wild. Never tried goat milk but have a can of it that we could try.

I drink it raw, make soft cheese, sour cream, yogurt, butter on occasion. Hope to do some hard cheese this Spring.

Canned tastes nothing like fresh;). I have Saanen & Nubian does. My Saanen gives 1.5 gal per day, Nubian will be FF but I expect 1-1.5 gal from her....both are from great milk lines. Buck is Nubian and also heavy milking linage. 2 other Nubians are mini but, still 3/4 gal a day.

Also make goat milk soap, which I use and sell.
