I Don't...! After more than 35yrs with All_tate they dropped my homeowners policy this week.Never had a claim.I live to close to the ocean, in hurricane territory. Of course this made me a little mad, but i'm over it
I'm shopping for new coverage, so far it been a nightmare. My home is payed for, i'm not required to carry coverage. However, i'd at least like fire and liabilty coverage.Maybe i won't get any insurance.
How many of you have no coverage at all, and how do you sleep at night, with no coverage..? Full coverage,or just some.? The way things have unfolded with the just recent monster tornato, plenty will be needing insurance for this emergency.!

Um, I sell insurance for a living.

I will never go with out it. I will live without power before I go without insurance...and I loves me some 'lectricity. I've seen some really terrible things happen to people with no insurance. I personally can not afford not to have it. Not just home insurance, but all sorts of goodies the average person doesn't carry.

Unfortunately, living in coastal areas, or areas near water, or to far away from a fire hydrant, or fire station, can screw ya.

It is a personal choice when you're not required to have it. It's all in what your pocket can handle.

My SIL did not have any life insurance. So, when she died, it really made it hard for my brother to cover just the cheapest funeral he could have. There weren't many flowers there because many people gave money to my brother instead. There was just 1 floral arrangement from my side, my sister, parents and I all chipped in on that so we could give more money to Steve.

I don't have any insurance of any kind. I would like rental insurance but we can't really afford anything extra right now. But it's on my list once I get a job that gives me a bit more wiggle room in the budget. I've been drawing off savings to eat this entire last 6 weeks since they cut hours at work. We have them back, but that's normal in my current industry.

We have an old barn we used to milk cows in. I dropped the insurance on it last summer because it's no longer usable. Naturally, a month after I dropped the insurance, a big wind took the barn down. :th
That's about how my luck goes, so I'd never go without insurance on the house.

I am the type that must have insurance.

I scrap up the bucks to have it....I don't want to have to pay for it, lol, but I need that piece of mind. And yup I have made a few claims they paid off and I was happy to have that coverage.

If you can't find any or can't afford it, you do what you must do...go without.

x2 I have always tried to have at least some basic coverage.

I do know that a certain major insurance carrier has had major issues with the Florida Dept of Insurance regarding their business practices over the years and often drops customers to cover their butts with the DOI.

Yep....living in this coastal area is the reason they dropped me.Thing is,i'm over a half mile from the water, and don't really care about the hurricane/flood coverage.I'm more concerned with fire and liability.I had a guy try to sue me for one millin dollars, because he claimed my dog knocked him off his bike in front of my house and crippled him for life...! Since then i've carried a one million dollar umbrella policy.Turns out it was a case of mistaken idenity and the lawsuit was dropped. That incident scared the poo out of me ...Had he won the case, i would have lost everything including my home.I also burn firewood for heat, so that coverage is a no brainer.I would sleep very well at night with just that coverage

Hey Kev--get some insurance from Gettinaclue

Insurance--a necessary evil. Obvioulsy we have home owners insurance since we have a mortgage, the highest deductibles. We have never, in 20 years, made a claim. On our beater vehicles, we have liability only. WE have term life insurance, and Hubby has a great policy at his work.

As far as what insurance to get once our house is paid off, well, I guess we would need to do some thinking there, but like I said, it is a necessary evil. I have heard too many stories about peoples houses burning down and not having insurance. I sure would hate to be in their position.

Having suffered losses in the NC 4/16/11 string of tornatoes (2 dead in my county)I do have a few thoughts. Frankly I thought I had done very well, the huge trees had not crushed my house or car, the roof appeared to be ok and the storms and screens took the hit from the stuff flying around. Unpaid groups from the churches had made a huge stack of downed trees along the road in front of the house and provided meals until the power was restored. I thought The biggest problem was that the strong support cables for the power had ripped the pipe they were attached to at the house off.
Then Yesterday the insurance adjuster finally showed up (inported from MI) According to him I need a whole new roof since some of the plywood decking was shifted during the storm and I might even need new rafters and insulation. Uncertain until the old roof was removed. The wall where the power cables were attached was "racked" (no longer square) Probably fixable by removing the siding and plywood, squaring and rebracing the studs so they were square and renailing plywood and siding or completely rebuilding the wall, again unknown, until after tear off is done.
Maybe a check in 2-3 weeks probably longer.
Meanwhile all the known repair contractors are booked, and not even taking names for future repairs.
In the afternoon I went to FEMA for some of that government help. Nada, zero, zip, No government help I have insurance but no employment to repay a low interest loan. Like the Banks, no help unless ypu can prove you don't need it. Hooray for goverment assistance!
