What about a chicken tractor and let the chickens leave it barren?

I've thought about that in the garden. I use the silkies to attempt to keep the grass low in their fenced communal courtyard but they haven't been able to kill it yet. I do plan on planting pole peas in the courtyard this year. Silkies are easy to control and won't be allowed to weed the peas until they get a few feet tall.

The large fowl are the grass killers. But not catnip unfortunately. I have to weed their run because of that. They free range so there are no dandelions where they frequent. They also eat some of the moss out of the lawn.

Yep -- those big girls will scratch and eat grass, roots and all! Just have to concentrate the area for them or get more chickens! ;) toss some scratch where you want them to clear an area. I find they LOVE building edges to scratch around.
