Growing potatoes

Holes in the plastic, and that helps with watering where it retains moisture Soil is a looser clay type....

So you would be planting the potato pieces in the holes in the plastic? I'm a little confused--wouldn't the new potatoes try to grow up above the old seed potato piece, possibly on top of the plastic? Are you planning to put straw or compost on top of the plastic, to support the growing plant?
Last year I just tossed the seed potatoes on the ground and covered with about 6" of straw, watered it in, and covered with about 6" again when the plants grew through the straw. Harvest wasn't great, but OK. They were growing in the straw, so were clean and easy to harvest.

No it the dirt under the straw under the hay......thats where they will be planted
