Growing sunflowers to eat... (You AND you animals!

I picked it up in Lehman's Catalog, but I'm sure they are available elsewhere for cheaper -- Lehman's is awfully proud of their products

I have been trying to grow sunflowers this year as well :) My soil is not very good and I read they can help clear out toxins. The wild birds thought it was the best day ever the first time I spread seed out 🙄 I have sprouted them covered since then. The seeds I put in pots have grown but very few grew from the ground survived. The pets love the young plants from the pots but I have to restrain myself and let a few grow to full size. The bugs are getting a good feed from them too.

I grew some monster sunflowers in my last house but havent done as well here yet. I know I will have success eventually! Might need to buy in one more bag of seeds though before I have enough to keep us supplied.

whatever the chipmunks don't find and eat here the deer usually will top them off. i think Mom has given up trying to grow them.

I grew sunflowers this summer, and when they were ready to be harvested, I, well, harvested them! (Of course...lol)
I decided to save some money on chicken food, so I fed sunflower seeds, as well as chicken food. But I used a smaller amount of chicken food while the sunflower seeds lasted, so I saved some money this month!

Next year, I'm planning to grow enough sunflowers for my family, and my chickens!

If we can cultivate sunflowers here in the Philippines, I will surely do that, I love sunflower seeds. I would love to grow my own.

I had a few dozen sprout and growing about a foot high, until I let the ducklings out to free roam. The destroyed most of them. At least they got a good feed I suppose! Haha. I have about 10 left. 2 ready to flower just in time for my mum to visit which will be nice. I have seen 4 ladybugs living in the bud so they must be getting a nice feast of aphids too.

Those I posted a pic were ones that came up from where I had tossed seed out to chickens. There were many more. LOL.

Now, the goats don't have access or the plants would not survive. I find the BOSS seed I buy for feed does great at growing. Bad soil? Add chicken manure! I often find plants sprouting in the horse pasture, in their favorite manure deposit area....seeds that did not decompose in transit. LOL I don't press for oil but do save the flower heads for winter feed.
