Haven't thought about this happening

I don't have a huge supply of anything stocked up. I just don't do it. Yup, I have enough. I do have big supplies of toilet paper in the house...LOL...cause when on sale I load up! And I have alot of my canned green beans, my frozen corn, my meats etc. etc.....but I have about 1 month worth of food in the house to make meals. I have more food to live on if necessary but the meals wouldn't be elaborate..LOL

I can't afford to throw money at stocking up groceries and such. I have to divide my money all around each week. Wish I could stock more but I am not the type that feels I need too either. I don't have the fear factor that some people have I guess...I don't know...LOL

Fear is a big motivator while money is a close second I guess for hoarding.

I'm with you FarmerChick. If we couldn't buy any food for a month (or maybe even more) my family would NOT starve. But I haven't been "stocking up," just taking advantages of good prices when I can get them.

I think that there is just a lot of crazy info out there about food and possible food scarcity. For some reason it seems to push peoples panic button.

About a year ago, on Yahoo news of all places, I read an article advocating that people "invest" a considerable amount of their savings on stockpiling food as prices were going to rise considerably over the next few years. So in theory it would be money saved over the long run. I just wondered what would happen if your car broke down and you had spent all your savings on food. Could you pay your mechanic in Cap'n Crunch?

Nobody is saying to run out an buy out Walmart. Times are hard all over and we need to be more prepared. I know I see a big difference in my grocery receipts this year than I did last year and it's only going to get worse.
Unemployment is at an all time high.
I know I am going to start buying all the fruit & nut bearing trees I can.
I will be buying an extra can or two of salmon, tuna & pork & beans when I have the extra cash. We live paycheck to paycheck like a lot of people.

***LOL-LOL-LOL
that had me cracking up...HA HA

yea for me I will always buy more of a good sale but I know I will never go into the "stock up for 5 years" type emergency situations. Money has to go to too many places. I wish it didn't :(

I haven't started putting into the pantry like I want to because as soon as anything gets put into the pantry/freezer it gets used up by teenagers with gusto.

I really do not have the money to do any of that either right now.

I am trying to imagine teenagers tearing through 20 lbs of dried beans. Imagination fails me :P

Just kiddin', and I do know what you mean,

Beans? I quit buying beans yrs ago 'cause the only one who ended up eating the beans was myself!!

I think a lot of people are canning and stocking up these days. Its really hard to buy jars at the store to can, you have to get there on the right day before they sell out. Same with lids for the jars.

I would be busted too. I have 100lbs of hard wheat berries, 50 lbs of soft white. 45 lbs of corn & alfafa & 30lbs of peanuts in my pantry. Not to mention all the cereal I bought on fabulous sales(with coupons too). MAybe I should have dh dig a root cellar that is not findable to the naked eye with his backhoe to put my buckets in.
My question would be what about the mormon church & all they have hoarded away?
:hu
