Howdy WBFG!! I also garden in a not-so-hospitable place. Have you thought of putting in a cold frame?

This is mine from last Oct/Nov. We also get very cold/long winters. I harvested salad greens from this thing until I finally tore them out to start over the last week of February. It withstood temps all the way down to -13 without the wind chill! I was very impressed with it and plan to make another one for this next winter. I did have a light in it, but it held without one all the way down to 6. I did cover it with a sleeping bag at night, and surrounded it with compost and grass clippings on the sides, but it was amazing what I grew in there.
Here is what it looked like all buttoned up. The sleeping bag was for insulation, and the tarp was to keep the sleeping bag dry. (removing a sodden sleeping bag in the mornings was NO fun)
