Question; I canned bread & butter pickles. I opened a jar and lid was beginning to rust. Should I leave alone and wait or reprocess the pickles or transfer to clean jars? Any ideas in dire need of help!!

Just for back ground - you canned these pickles? Did you use the two piece method...one flat seal and one threaded lid? If so: was it just the threaded lid that's rusting? (you know you're supposed to take those off after you've finished canning - so they don't rust :hide )

If the flat seal itself is still good and there wasn't any bulging and it's still tightly sealed then they're "probably" fine. But, you should do whatever you feel comfortable with.

AND most importantly - WELCOME!

When did you can the pickles? If last year, after considering what FEM said, they should be ok. If several years ago......maybe not.

Did you follow an approved recipe, meaning one from The National Center for Home Food Preservation, or from Ball Canning? If so, you are probably ok. The acid in the pickling liquid should protect you from botulism and most of the others are detectable by sight or smell. Still as the others said, you are taking a risk that only you can decide is acceptable or not.

I would not reprocess or transfer them to other jars. Did the rust affect the seal? At our house, the rule is, "If in doubt, throw it out."
Btw, we LOVE pictures here! So much easier when we can see what you see.
