I'm from Northeastern Wisconsin, and proud of it. I had a friend who had a farmstead surrounded by urban metropolis. Stores on the north side of her, city park (huge ice rink building) on the east, and subdivision housing all around. It had been in her family forever - until the city grew past and around them. She finally sold it to a developer - with pressure from the city - but only because the next generation of the family had no interest in continuing with the lifestyle. They wanted the "inheritance".
