HHO?

Okay - anyone heard of this? Some guy at my motorcycle shop told me. I laughed and said - yeah, that's water. He claims there's a fuel technology using water. Here's the links he sent me. Anyone know if this is for real?

This following book is from 1919, so one has to ask, why has it taken this long for this technology to come about? How much would the our environment be different if we had adopted this technology along with the industrial revolution? Basic electrolysis and some dry cell designs from almost 100 years ago! The Internet Archive is my former employer and is a great place for history research...

Here is my chemistry prof's take on fuel cells:

-This technology is old. It's how we got to the moon. (Yes, there are various types of fuel cells, some hydrogen, some water, etc. But just like a gas engine and diesel engine are both internal combustion engines, a fuel cell is a fuel cell.)

-It is very, very expensive. You need something highly conductive and something that leaks ions just so. Usually copper won't even work, it has to be platinum, which is unbelievably expensive and in demand for other purposes already (no, not jewelry). Because there is such a scant amount of platinum in the world, they are trying to minimize the amount needed per fuel cell and set up an ultra efficient recycling method.

-You are driving around with a bomb. Yeah, you can say that about gas vehicles- hell, my van caught on fire in a bank parking lot this Memorial Day, so I know- but a gasoline vehicle is more like a grenade, and a fuel cell is more like a weapon of mass destruction. Again, they are working on this.

-Infrastructure. We are struggling with electricity refueling stations, when most of the country is wired. Putting a hydrogen processing plant on every corner is tough.

I am a layperson, not a chemist or an engineer by any means, but this is how I understand it.
