Homemade insect repellent

Last year I tried a simple bug spray of Witch Hazel and Eucalyptus EE. It didn't really work that well. :/

Hey big brown horse, I live in Seattle. :) So, I tried a total of five different types of homemade insect repellent this weekend. We had 13 people there for two days with LOTS of mosquitoes and only ended up with a total of 5 bites. Yay!! I was very excited with the results. We applied often and generously and that seems to be the ticket. I think some people apply once and hope it will work for hours and hours, but the general rule is, if you can't smell it any longer, chances are the mosquitoes are going to start looking at you like a giant pink sippy cup for bugs.

I'll post the different types tomorrow when I have access to the recipes. Huge thumbs up on these things. Yes, it requires a trip to an herb store or just a trip to an herb store online, but it's so worth it to not have toxins coating my skin every time I want to go outside without ending up itchy.

We have used homemade fly repellent on our horses for years.

Quite simple

2 c Apple cider vinegar (other vinegar will work)
1 squirt of dish detergent (Dawn or citrus ... acts as a sticking agent)
4 c water

in a sprayer and spray away.

NOTE: Vinegar will bleach the coat of darker horses out in the sun, so not good for show horses. Sometimes in a hard rain your horse may have suds!!

It IS true you can catch more flies with sugar than with vinegar!
