So Kevin brought in 10 duck eggs yesterday. There isn't any place in the duck pen where they have shade all day, and we haven't been able to build nestboxes yet, so they did the best they could where they laid their eggs.

We cracked one open last night, and the egg was partially cooked. Had a fairly thick layer of set egg white around the inside of the shell. Hasn't really even been that hot here, not over 90.

I guess if we want ducklings this year, we are going to have to get some shady places into that duck pen, otherwise all we'll get are boiled eggs! :)

And pre-roasted ducks! I have a new appreciation for how well insulated a duck is after butchering a few. Get you some shade cloth ASAP. You might even be able to find some cheap on craigslist or put out a WANT on your local freecycle list.

I use grape vines to shade my duck's pen in the summer. I love it.

We thought we'd go cut some of the invasive cedars, and lay the branches around for shade and shelter. Just have to find a time when we can get out with the chain saw.
