How to know if your deep litter method is working...

I think it probably works better with a dirt floor. That's what I have and it works great. I do lock them in until mid-morning on occasion and then they will churn up the litter, but not so much under the roosts unless I go in and spade it a little first. I did line the lower walls with vinyl flooring so it wouldn't compost out my walls, though!

Are you using shavings or straw? Cuz last year I used shavings and it stank to high heaven. This year straw, and it was a perfect additon to any garden.

A mixture of both.
