I work off and on for a local church camp. They keep pigs to compost the kitchen scraps then have them processed for a huge maple syrup festival in the early spring.
The head cook was having difficulty slicing 2 of the hams for an upcoming dinner...she got frustrated and gave up, resorting to a store-bought boneless ham. She turned to me and asked if I could use them as she'd otherwise have to toss them out!!

HECK YEA!! I now have 2 giant ham hocks wrapped in my freezer as well as 2 gallon bags full of ground ham!! :drool
I was also asked to empty out the fridge and toss or take home anything I came across. I found 1/2 gallon of beef stew only 2 days old, 1/2 sheet pan of cornbread, plus 1 gallon bag full of goldfish crackers and pretzels for the kiddies!

Yea for all things free!!!:weee

Yay you!

Ham can be stretched to go really far, too.

If you have more than will fit in your fridge and/or freezer, I'd be more than willing to take some of that ham off your hands. After all, what are friends for? :D

I'm closer in distance to you than deb is... :hide

That's a good bit of food! So cool and welcome when you can get some good freebies like that! Enjoy it! :)

free is good

wow--that she said she was going to just toss it

ah, the waste is just everywhere :/

Is she INSANE?!?!?!

Glad you were there to snag them, but WTH?!?! Throw them out?
:th

Normally I share....but this is ham we're talkin'!!

The camp has such strict guidelines for their food storage. They bag up leftovers and date them 5 days out. On the 4th day any food not eaten is to be thrown away. I typically take the food and immediately freeze it.

It's usually enough for a decent meal for my family of 6. They serve the food family style (big bowls/platters for each table) and any food that is sent back to the kitchen from those bowls has to be thrown out that night. Since they use serving spoons/forks to dish it out I take those leftovers home too. Great job perk!!:thumbsup
