Nicole's school just got closed.

We get an automated phone message. I love it. The principal calls with a message and says, 1 hr delay, 2 hr or 3 hr.....well they just called again and said they are closed due to hazardous road conditions.
What county are you in, FC? The conditions seem to be pretty divergent (if that's the right word) around here...some places have 2-3 hour delays, some are canceled. I guess it depends on whether you're in the city, country, mountains, etc. :idunno

Catawba County

catawba has that mountain area that seems to be more of a reason to cancel sometimes.....there is nothing on the roads here, but higher up in Catawba Cty where the mts are the roads could be icy.

so we get a delay and wonder why the heck they called that --lol --since our roads are fine.

I don't know your area....what bigger city are you near? just wondering

I'm about 20 miles or so east of Raleigh.

You might remember the big laugh-riot a few years ago, when there was a 1/2 inch of snow & people were stuck on the beltline around Raleigh for 8-10 hours. (I wasn't scheduled to work that day, but DH got stuck out there; he was in traffic so long his truck over-heated; had to call Raleigh PD to come pick him up & take him to a hotel for the night; had his truck broken into in a KFC parking lot & all his tools stolen; etc etc.) Yeah, we just LOVE bad weather in NC!! :tongue

How does hat work? 3 hour delay? Do they stay at school for 3 hours longer? I was thinking my Kindergartner is only at school for 3 1/2hours total. Do they broadcast this on the tv? I guess if you have no power the kids just stay home?

Geesh I am going to have a lot to learn.

Yes, when you move out of a warm state, you will learn about school closings, delays, and everything else getting closed or cancelled, too! We turn on the local tv or radio station here and they list all the school closings/delays and all the meeting/event cancellations. On the tv, it is a rolling list at the bottom of the screen.

When I lived at the tippy-top of Maine, there were NO cancellations for school....or delays....in the four years that I went to high school there. 1976 was a record breaking year for snow, too....the snowbanks were so high that we were not allowed on them because the phone and electric wires were barely above them. The roads were like white tunnels with sky on top. If the weather was iffy in the morning, or if the school bus couldn't get up a slippery hill, the bus driver would get out the tire chains, put them on, go up the hill, get out, take them off again, and proceed on to school.

It sucked. For a kid. I'm sure the parents loved it, though!

I think we had fewer snow days when I was a kid here in CT too. Probably more law suits these days have scared administrators into closing??
For at least 3 of my HS years we had a superintendent who came to us from Alaska. He did not believe in snow days. So maybe that is why I'm remembering fewer.

I grew up in MI, on the shores of Lake Michigan (can anyone say "150 inches of snow each winter"?). There were no such things as "snow days".

However, when I was in high school, we had 3 days off for a huge ice storm (the whole town had no electricity for 3 days). I remember only ONE time (K-12) we had time off for snow - freemotion, must've been the same storm you had, cuz I remember it was in 1976!! - when we had 36" of snow overnight. All the roads had snowdrifts over my head; the only way to get around was by snowmobile.

Ahh, those were the good ol' days...;)
