Is your garden hose poisoning your water?

I was shocked this morning to hear that a lot of garden hoses contain lead (and a few other nasties as well), which in small amounts can leak into your water. For those who use garden hoses to fill their livestocks' waterers and those who drink from the hose now and then, you may want to check this out:

I let the stale water run out of the hose before filling chicken water. Stale smells like hose so I assume it's leached out stuff.

Even as a kid we ran the hose clear before drinking out of it.

If you have very old plumbing in your house, you're supposed to run the water before drinking or using to cook because a lot of old plumbing is contaminated with lead as well.
