Italian bread recipe?

So, I finally found out (after 21 years of life, yes, I'm an idiot) that my favorite bread is an Italian bread. Dense, moist and yummy with a nice soft crust, almost like pound cake, but a bread. Anyone have a tried and true basic Italian bread recipe that they are willing to share? Thanks guys!

Oh, and, what's the difference between white and Italian (recipe-wise)?

I have a recipe for Italian bread but it's kind of like a French baguette, not dense and moist like pound cake. Where do you normally get the bread? Does it have a name?
