Jess172 journal: I want to do it all!

They told a few horror stories at the class. Moral of the stories; follow the directions exactly; and food safety. The lady who taught the class had us can a few things for hands on experience and it seemed pretty straight forward but she said we can call her anytime if we have any problems/questions.
As for the horses. Right now the kids are too intimidated to pet or ride them, but they like looking at them from a distance. Apparently getting bit by the horse bug is already anticipated because the owners offered to sell me one yesterday! I said no thanks, not right now anyways.....
 
I used to do pony rides. And we'd have kids terrified of the ponies-until they actually got on. Then, they didn't want to get off!
 
I used to be really nervous about canning meat -- so many stories out there. But now I realize that if you follow the directions carefully, and keep your area nit-picky clean, your meat is less likely to be tainted than the stuff you buy at the store :)
 
Let's see...early this week I had the stomach virus, finally got over that and then we got a puppy! Now I'm getting ready for a yard sale tomorrow. Been a busy week. I wanted to put the bantams in the coop this weekend but its going to be kind of cool so I may wait. I'm planning on letting the ducks out to free range this weekend as well. Got a big patch of clover they'll love.
 
Hoping by now the tummy trouble is over.

Tell us more about your new puppy!

The ducks will LOVE that clover, plus of course any bugs running around. For some reason, a diet of bugs makes the best tasting eggs...

This is Princess Bella. Bella for short. Obviously chosen by my kiddos :) she's a 13 week old beagle. I'm loving the Black and Tan coloring. She's a spoiled baby already!
We let the ducks out today and they went immediately to the clover. Gorged themselves and settled down for a nap. They don't seem too interested in exploring and stick close to their home. Hubby tried to show them the pond but they won't step one foot in it. I may have defective ducks :lol:
We put the bantams in the coop today. But only after I found out where they came from. Everything else came from mcmurray and Meyer but I bought silkies at rural king. Apparently any chicks that came from mt. Healthy and most TSC are assumed to have salmonella! I called my rural king and they didn't come from there so potential crisis averted.
Well I gotta go finish up the yard sale!

Give your ducks time to feel comfortable and they will eventually discover the pond on their own. Our ducks took a long time before they started being brave enough to wander all over. They are a year old now, and I've been letting them out of their coop every day to free range since last September or so. At first they were always within about 10 yards of the coop; but now they wander over almost the entire half acre.
 
She is so cute!

The feed store were I got my chicks gets them from Ideal Hatchery, so I'm assuming I'm safe.
