I began my self-sufficient journey two years ago. I now have big gardens, chickens, Muscovy ducks, Pilgrim geese, Bourbon Red turkeys and meat rabbits. I teach special education to high school and middle school in the public school and have been known to give a sermon on Sunday or any other time. Now I'm done and need to take a nap.

It's been a few days since my last post. This is because school has re-started which means I have gone back to work. I teach special education to middle school and high school kids. The paperwork is a PAIN! However, I do love the kids. The main problem is that "work" takes me away from doing what I really enjoy, my backyard.
I picked a bucket full of okra yesterday. That stuff should be labeled a weed because it grows, and grows. But I love to eat it. My tomatoes are finally coming off, we've canned twenty plus quarts of soup base, plus 30 pints of salsa. My broccoli is finally done, the chickens will enjoy the stalks. I am thinking about putting some more out this fall, if all goes well. I may plant some more cabbage and carrots also.
I going to be processing rabbits some evening this week. It is funny. When I first started raising them my extended family wasn't interested in eating them. We started serving BBQ rabbit when they came over and all the sudden it's "when can we get some?"
I have several extended members who are starting to see the major benefits of what I'm doing in my yard and how little room, time, expense there really is to it. We have literally hundreds of dollars of food stuff, maybe thousands, on our shelves and in our freezers. All there with only minor expenses, such as some feed, electricity, canning supplies, water, and a lot of sweat equity. The sweat equity is also good for the waistline as I've dropped several inches this summer, need a new hole in the belt, oh ya!
I love my hobby very much and would love to be able to do it "full time." However, the bills keep coming, so off to work I go.
