So I got a call from the boys and they are thinking of coming up for thanks giving... this is great!

But alas, will I have to buy a precooked turkey?

I have no oven to speak of. Only holds a 11 inch casserole dish... so I am thinking that this might be a great excuse to purchase some kind of outdoor oven that I could cook 12 to 16 pound turkey in.

I've been thinking of a rocket stove for emergency but don't know much about them and but I do know that for survival I could cook for a very long time with all the sage brush around here with something like that.

Do you have any ideas for my emergency prepardness arsenal that could take care of a turkey?

I once cooked a turkey in a hole in the ground but I'd like to advance from that.

Well. Do you ever plan on butchering chckens? If so, then I recommend getting aturkey deep fryer. You can cook a turkey in it, and then heat the water in it for wehen you pluck the chicken. We bought aturkey fryer solely for the chicken plucking. I totally recommend getting a stainless. My sil has an aluminum one and it is crap, really.

It never dawned on me to bbq a turkey!

a good idea.... but alas, no gravey!

we were talking about trying the pit method again.... its been 20 years since we did it last.

I was just hoping it would be an excuse for purchasing a rocket stove... oh well.

Guess we will likely grill it.

anything partiuclar needed to know about grilling a turkey?

What should I baste it with?

How about a cranberry bbq sauce? any recipies out there?

I'll look at the turkey friers and we could use it for butchering as that is on our list... but somehow a fried turkey? we don't even eat fried chicken, only baked or sauteed.

I didn't know you could buy a rocket stove! I thought they were all home made.

These days when I roast a chicken I do it on the gas grill - just season it as usual, put it in a roasting pan, and put it on the grill, covered. Keep the temp around 375*, and cook till done. This keeps the kitchen cool, and DH is happier not to have the smell in the house (poor deluded man! Is there anything nicer than the smell of roasting chicken?). My point is that doing it this way I get lovely drippings for the gravy. Depending on the size of your bird, and your grill, I see no reason why you couldn't do this with a turkey as well. Now, this is *roasted* chicken; *grilled* chicken is another thing entirely, and also very good :)

Thanks guys for helping me to figure out probably what I should have been able to do by myself..

I'll have to look for a lidded roasting pan now to roast the turk on the grill

here's a rocket stove.... and i think emergency essentials has one for 69.
