ksalvagno's farm journal - Time for change

Goats can normally have anywhere from 1 to 4 kids. I think 5 is very unusual. I just heard about someone having 5 but the 5th one didn't survive. I think 4 is more than enough.

Millie kidded this morning. Twins. A buck and doe. Both are solid black with frosted ears and some white on their muzzles and blue eyes (dad has blue eyes). They seem to be doing good. Pictures later.

Millie had twins. One male, one female. It appears they both have blue eyes. Look almost exactly the same except the female has white on her chin and the male doesn't But they both have frosting on their ears and noses and a white spot on their head. They are both solid black but the heat lamp is making them look a little more brown. So far the little female is having trouble finding the teats. She insists on nursing on Millie's front. I have done all the tricks that I know of to get her on the teats but so far no go. I got about 10 ounces of colostrum into her so now I'm going to let her get hungry. Hopefully that will help. Although I didn't give her anything until after she was on the ground for 4 hours so being hungry earlier didn't work. But we will see.

Little girl finally started nursing on mom. I dipped Millie's teat in her own milk for the second time today and it worked. I think it helped that the doeling had some of mom's milk so she knew this time what that smell and taste was. So both kids are nursing on mom now. I'm very thankful. I didn't need another bottle baby.

Karen, they look like my girls! Black with frosted ears....they are cute! Are you keeping the does this year? How many total kids are you up to now???

Thanks!

I've had 18 kids so far and I have 4 more does to kid. I wasn't planning to keep any kids this year but I think if Millie's doeling doesn't sell, I won't be upset. :D
