Well, it was more than grains, I had to restart carbs other than sugar. I became malnourished, had so little energy that I could barely walk ! I lost more than half my hair, had an unexplained near shut down of the GI tract, and had altered mental functioning (some say it never returned!). I became clumsy and weak as my body began consuming my muscle tissue. I ended up falling a lot, and ultimately was knocked unconscious in one of the falls. That's when I decided it was time to return to eating the way I was created to eat.
I was quite ill and had to be very careful about slowly adding back in the carbs. I had lost 80 pounds in three months, which was ridiculous. I had limited my carbs so severely that my body had nothing to draw energy from.
After getting back to normal nutritional status, I regained about 80% of my previous strength, but the damage to the muscles hasn't completely resolved. I also know that my mental acuity isn't what it used to be.
In other words, it has been about five years, and I am still not the person I was before I thought it was a good idea to almost completely eliminate carbs. It was a bad decision, came on the heels of my divorce, and I became compulsive about it...keeping carbs to less than 15 a day, lower if I could manage it. Not at all intelligent.
