They have a thread over at BYC about movies. I think books are better than movies JMO. So I am starting this list, NAME YOUR FAVORITE BOOKS/AUTHORS. You get six categories FICTION - ACTION
NON FICTION
FANTASY
SCI FI
HORROR
ROMANCE
If you dont have a book for that category then skip it.
ACTION- CLIVE CUSSLER - all of them
NON FICTION- cant think of any
FANTASY-PIERS ANTHONY- all of them
SCI FI- ARTHUR C. CLARKE- all of them
HORROR- STEPHEN KING- corner of his eye
ROMANCE- LAURELL K HAMILTON all of them, for those of you who have read this author, well, I know romance is a stretch.:D
I would also like to list my personal all time favorite "The Left Behind Series"

FANTASY - The Inheritance Trilogy by Christopher Paolini

SCI FI - um..not sure, will get back to that one

As always, I can't possibly pick favorites among my books, but here's an attempt, which a quick change of mind could undo at any moment.

FICTION: "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" by Haruki Murakami

NONFICTION: I love nonfiction, so I'm giving myself a few:

"The Culture of Fear" by Barry Glassner
"The Omnivore's Dilemma" by Michael Pollan
"Lives of a Cell" by Lewis Thomas

FANTASY: "The Left Hand of Darkness" by Ursula LeGuin

SCI-FI: "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut

HORROR: anything by Edgar Allen Poe

ROMANCE: poetry, baby, poetry. I'm a sucker for love poems.

Books rate so much higher than movies for me!

Fiction - The Good Earth, Pearl Buck
also Jack London and Mark Twain are at the top

Non-Fiction - anything by Pema Chodron

Fantasy - Harry Potter series, JK Rowling

Sci Fi - The best of all was Heinlein, the world is a sadder place without him.

Horror - The Stand (uncut version), Stephen King

Romance - Mrs. Mike by Benedict & Nancy Freedman, if you have not read this book find an old copy (c. 1947) and curl up this winter. You will laugh and cry and it will hit home to all of you.

I read a zillion books, watch next to no movies. I will restrict my answers to living authors, otherwise it would be too hard to decide:

Don't read action type books.

General FICTION, I would probably pick Umberto Eco, please don't hurt me :p

Can't think of a favorite nonfiction author.

FANTASY: Stephen Brust (e.t.a. - no wait, Terry Pratchett, although 'fantasy' is probably not the best description)

SCIENCE FICTION: Orson Scott Card, 'cept his politics in some recent books kinda bother me.

Don't care for horror genre, but I'd agree The Stand was very very good (tho I don't much enjoy reading Stephen King in general)

ROMANCE - Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters (they are the same person)

What about MYSTERY? I will have to break my 'living authors only' rule and say Rex Stout (the Nero Wolfe books).

Hmm...I am limited type reader.

Clive Clussler is tops in my book...have read all the NUMA adventures with Dirk and Kurt etc....great books! I loved the movie, Sahara, they made with Matthew McCoughney (??) however you spell it..HA HA HA

Don't read romance, rarely read science fiction, but will read things like CIA, KGB, type action books.

LOVED Jan Caron "father tim--medford" series books! Those are wonderful!!!!

I used to read tons, now with my kid, I can't seem to get any time and when I do, I do other things I couldn't when dealing with her....I got my mother earth news like 2 weeks ago and haven't cracked it yet...UGH

LOL

Pat(&C): Why would I judge you? I think Umberto Eco is totally awesome. Then again, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool geek. Still, though. Yay for Eco!

So, is Eco meant to be a literary geek? I read his "The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana" and thought it was fascinating!

FICTION- I just finished a book called Water Witches by Chris Bohjalian and loved it! I'm never good at keeping favorites, they change with the tides, but I highly recommend this one.
