OK you got me, who is umberto eco? what kind of books?

Long wordy books with extensive digressions into semiotics and the fascinating minutiae of history

The Name of the Rose (was made into an 'enh' movie with sean connery, but the book is excellent) and Foucault's Pendulum (my favorite!) and Island of the Day Before (I probably have that title slightly wrong) are probably his most relatively normal books.
